It’s Monday so we’re back for another lip product review! If you haven’t been keeping up with this blog, I’m doing a lip review every week day in May! Why? I just thought it would be quite fun to challenge myself and it has been a rather interesting and definitely challenging few days; I didn’t realise how much work it is to keep up with a back-to-back posting schedule! So I’m having more respect for bloggers who does this for a living now.
Today’s review is on the Mellow Cosmetics Ultra Matte Lipstick in Madness. I got this from a LookFantastic box a few months ago, and the stated retail price is USD13 for 3.8g of product. Mellow Cosmetics is designed and developed in New Zealand, although the product is made in China; I don’t have anything against makeup made in China but I dislike it when brands emphasize that it is “designed” somewhere else and downplay where it is made, as if it is trying to hide it. This claims to be paraben free and no animal testing.
The shade I have here – Madness – is gorgeous; I would describe it as a blue-undertone ruby red. I really do like the shade and think it’s so pretty; it makes my teeth look whiter, but I find it slightly less flattering than orange-reds on me. It has a matte finish, which I generally prefer for a red lipstick and I really do think fits very well for this shade. The pigmentation is very good and gives full coverage with just one application.
However, I find the texture to be very thick and slightly too dry. After wearing it for a few minutes, I find myself having to reach out for some balm which defeats the whole purpose of it being a matte lipstick. Also, because I don’t like how it feels on my lips and how dry it is, I wasn’t able to fully test out the lasting power. Initially, I liked the packaging – it looks nice and classy with its gold and beige bullet casing, but it gets dirty so easily!
So in all, gorgeous shade and great coverage but not my favourite red lipstick. I would also probably not purchase other shades because I don’t like the texture.
